It's finally
here! Widow's Welcome is out in the world. The real world,
with real readers. And we were lucky enough to see some of them at the launch
for the book at Penarth Pier Pavilion, in our home town of Cardiff.
We were just amazed
by how many people came out to support us and the book. We had friends come
from as far afield as York, Oxford, and Aberystwyth, as well as a good crowd of
locals.
It was great to see
a big 'ole pile of hardbacks, courtesy of Pernarth's fantastic indie bookshop, Griffin
Books - a massive thank you to Mel and her
hard-working team.
We also risked a
bit of audience participation on the night (thanks to Lucy Corbett for the great pic of the voting table). As well as doing a bit of
call-and-response, which led to 100+ people saying "The Audience is
listening", we got everyone to exercise their democratic right to vote. We
each read the start of the election stories that feature in Widow's
Welcome and asked the audience to vote: a black stone for Kath's
Casker reading, a white one for Dave's Lowlanders.
We were a little
nervous about this, to be honest. This kind of thing can be a bit gimmicky and fall
flat on the night, but everyone responded really well. We had approximately
98% voter turnout!
When we got home,
we couldn't wait to count the votes. We both predicted a close-run thing, and
we weren't wrong.
The final count
was:
55 for the
Lowlanders
47 for the Caskers
The first rumblings
of a Lowlander win this election . . .?
All in all, an
unbelievable night of seeing friends and family and celebrating the launch of
our first book as DK Fields. Thanks to everyone who came out to support us -
and thanks to those who couldn't make it but sent their best wishes and
congratulations. We felt extremely lucky the whole day.
